Considered as a symbol of good fortune by ancient Chinese,  toad appears on many art forms in the Chinese culture. For example,  the toad appeared  at the north west corner of the Han Dynasty silk painting. (see lower right image). The auspicious cloud motifs of this jade toad have the same style as those of the Late Spring Autumn Period Jade Bi, Outer D.7.5cm, inner D.2.37cm, T 0.3cm. 1250888_1347718780西漢馬王堆一號漢墓T型帛畫, 通長205厘米,頂端寬92厘米,末端寬47.7厘米,1972年長沙馬王堆一號漢墓出土馬王堆一號墓T型帛畫實為葬儀中用以表示招魂、導引後隨葬的旌幡。其製作精美、色彩鮮艷、線條流暢,充分反映了漢初繪畫藝術的風格和成就,是國內已知畫面最大、保存最完整、藝術性最強的漢代彩繪帛畫。這幅帛畫用單層的細絹作地,絹地現呈棕色,呈T形,上寬下窄。整幅帛畫用三塊絹帛拼成,中間用一長條整幅的絹,再取相當於長條三分之一的絹裁成兩半,分別拼縫在長條上部的兩側。帛畫頂部裹有一根竹竿,並係以棕色絲帶,以便張舉懸挂。中部和下部的兩個下角,均綴有青色細麻線織成的筒狀絳帶,長均為20釐米余。帛畫所描繪的內容自上而下可分為天上、人間、地下三部分,神話與現實、想像與寫實交織在一起,反映出當時人們相信死後可以成仙,飛升上天的信仰。而此幅帛畫主題即是“引魂升天”。畫面上部橫幅部分為天界。右上角為一輪紅日,日中有金烏,日下扶桑樹中尚有八個太陽,暗合中國古代的十日神話。左上角為一彎新月,月上有蟾蜍和玉兔,月下畫奔月嫦娥。日月之間,端坐人首蛇身的天界帝王,一條紅色長尾將自身團團圍住。其下有一道天門,旁邊不僅有門吏守衛,還有神龍、神鳥、異獸相對守001ec9591e6211f077300b望,備感威嚴與神聖。帛畫中部主要描繪墓主人升天之時的情景,而兩條交尾于玉璧之中的長龍又將此人間景象分為上、下兩部分。上部華蓋下一年邁貴婦拄杖而立,左側有兩個男人舉案跪迎,右側有三個侍女拱手相隨。這一情景應為墓主人西去升天之時。玉璧長龍之下為兒孫祭祀001ec9591e6211f0773009圖。彩帛帳幔分飄左右,兒孫神色悲哀地祭祀先人。帛畫最下部為地下世界。人間之下有一赤身裸體巨人,雙手平舉起白色平臺。巨人腳踩大鰲,腰纏蟒蛇,面目猙獰。而大龜、怪狗、鴟也環繞在巨人周圍,使得地下世界陰森可怖。馬王堆一號墓T型帛畫出土時,覆蓋于漢墓內第四層內棺蓋上,保存完好。根據漢時人們的喪葬習俗,T型帛畫為喪禮時必備之招魂幡,幡上繪墓主人形象。出殯時,此幡舉在靈柩之前,引導魂魄到墓地。入葬時,將幡放在棺上,隨之下葬。這樣,死者靈魂才得以升天。取自遠古神話和現實中的人與物構成天、地、人相溝通的境界。畫中人物行進在通往“天國”的途中,天上日月並輝、明樂環響,龍、豹、翼鳥、玉璧環繞周圍。
馬王堆一號墓T型帛畫不僅具有極高的藝術價值,而且極具文化內涵,對於人們了解西漢時期的社會生活、宗教信仰等各方面都有著極其重要的意義。
