何謂和田玉？和田玉本身不是地域概念，並非特指新疆和田地區出產的玉，而是一類產品的名稱。我國把透閃石成份佔98%以上的石頭都命名為和田玉，也可以稱為軟玉、透閃石、透閃石加軟玉、透閃石加和田玉，這幾個名字都不違法，都在國標範圍內。原產西域莎車國、於闐國（今中國新疆和田），考古結果證明，距今七千年前的仰韶文化遺址已發現有和田玉。中國把透閃石成份佔98%以上的石頭都命名為和田玉。
和田玉是一種由微晶體集合體構成的單礦物岩，含極少的雜質礦物，主要成分為透閃石。其著名
產地是號稱「萬山之祖」的昆崙山中，今新疆維吾爾族自治區和田地區。和田玉產於整個昆崙山北坡長約1300公里，以和田為中心的狹長地帶的昆崙山上與河中之玉璞，故又把崑山玉稱為「和田玉」。和田玉是玉石中的高檔玉石，而且是我國國石的候選玉石之一。現今和田玉的名稱在國家標準中不具備產地意義，即無論產於新疆、青海、遼寧、貴州、俄羅斯、加拿大、韓國，其主要成分為透閃石即可稱為和田玉。
羊脂白玉是和田玉中的寶石級材料，是白玉中質純色白的極品，具備最佳光澤和質地，表現為：溫潤堅密、瑩透純淨、潔白無瑕、如同凝脂，故名。羊脂玉自古以來人們極為重視，是玉中極品，非常珍貴。
